Oscar? Versatile?

13 Jun

Much to our surprise, Oscar and I returned to the blogosphere after a weekend of rest and relaxation to find not one, but two Versatile Blogger Awards waiting for us! Oscar perked up at the mention of an “award,” but was disheartened to discover it wasn’t edible. Perhaps I’ll give him an extra Zuke’s treat for being such a versatile blogger. 😉

Much love to our friends at 2 Brown Dawgs and My Little Dog for including us among their list of nominees! We’re excited to tackle the prerequisites for accepting this award, which include link loving the blogger(s) who nominated us, sharing seven facts about us and passing on the award because sharing is caring.

  1. Oscar’s favorite color is green. After much observation, I’ve come to the conclusion that green is Oscar’s favorite color. His favorite blanket is green, his favorite toy is green and his bed is green. When he’s not playing with his beloved squeaky turtle, the toy in his mouth is green.
  2. I like experimenting with my diet. I was a vegetarian for about six months until enticed by an In-N-Out burger and attempted a vegan diet that lasted less than 24 hours (LOL!).
  3. I’m a self-professed bibliophile. I love books. I love the smell of books, the motion of turning a page and the satisfaction of finishing a story. All of which makes transitioning to an e-reader so difficult.
  4. Oscar’s named after a literary character. Oscar is named after the protagonist of Junot Diaz’s The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao.
  5. I adore Gone With the Wind. Romance blooms in the midst of the Civil War that left the South altered and scarred. I’m betting everyone has an inner Scarlett O’Hara and/or Rhett Butler. 😉
  6. Oscar sometimes howls in his sleep. Probably dreaming about sirens.
  7. Oscar was a lean, mean street dog. Alright, he was never mean, but he was lean at one point of his life! Oscar was a stray who needed a home and when no one claimed him, we decided to make him part of the family.

Now, the final prerequisite of receiving this prize—the pleasure of passing the award to fellow bloggers! Here are some of our favorite blogs, in no particular order:

  1. Raising Daisy
  2. Le Paws Voyage
  3. Yuki the Dog
  4. Live, Bark, Love
  5. Happy.Bark.Days
  6. The Daily Toki
  7. Sabrina’s Pug Tails
  8. Snoopy’s Dogblog
  9. Oscar the Pooch
  10. According to Gus
  11. Wandering Wolfy
  12. Daily Bailey
  13. Sugar the Golden Retriever
  14. Cat Versus Human
  15. Kame & Kroten Blog

Thank you for making this blogging journey so enjoyable!

ABCs of… Who? Me?

10 Jun

After congratulating our friend at Live, Bark, Love on her academic achievements to reading an interview about the human behind Happy.Bark.Days, I realized how little I’ve shared about myself with my blogging friends.

So, Oscar’s taking a break from the blogosphere and I’m commandeering his web space (just for today)! Our friends at According to Gus used the alphabet to disclose fun facts about themselves and I thought it would be fun to use the same format with pictures of Oscar peppered in-between to satisfy your Oscar fix. 😉

A.  Age: 24

B.  Book(s): Some of my favorites are The Heart is a Lonely Hunter, Pride and Prejudice, Life of Pi, 1984 and, of course, the Harry Potter series. My bookshelf is loaded with books. I’m considering a Kindle…

C.  Chore You Really Dislike: Believe it or not, I actually enjoy cleaning. I’m a freak, I know.

D.  Dogs or Cats: Cats 😉

E.  Essential Start to Your Day: Can’t start the day without rubbing Oscar’s belly for good luck.

F.  Food You Really Dislike: Brussels sprouts. Yuck.

G.  Guilty Pleasure: Video games. First-person shooters to be exact.

H.  Height: I’m 5”4. Mike’s 6”0.

I.  Instruments You Play: I can play Nirvana’s Come As You Are on guitar. That’s about it. Mike has enough musical talent for the both of us. He can play acoustic and electric guitar, bass guitar and drums.

J.  Job Title: Freelance copy editor

K.  Kids: No, thank you! At least not anytime soon.

L.  Location: Quiet suburb about 25 minutes from Los Angeles.

M.  Musician(s): Jimi Hendrix. Enough said.

N.  Nicknames: I don’t have any nicknames but Oscar has a ton, some of which include Oscar Baby, Baby and Boy.

O.  Overnight Hospital Stays: None! *knocks on wood*

P.  Pet Peeve: Pet owners who leave their dogs in the car with the window cracked open, thinking it’s enough to keep them cool. It drives me nuts!

Q.  Quote From a Movie: Dark Helmet: Before you die there is something you should know about us, Lone Starr. / Lone Starr: What? / Dark Helmet: I am your father’s brother’s nephew’s cousin’s former roommate. / Lone Starr: What’s that make us? / Dark Helmet: Absolutely nothing! Which is what you are about to become. Spaceballs

R.  Right or Left Handed: I’m right-handed. Mike is a lefty.

S.  Siblings: Only child

T.  Television Show: I Love Lucy! It never gets old for me.

U.  Underwear: Yes, please.

V.  Vices: Gluttony. I live to eat and I’m not afraid to try new things, however strange they may be.

W.  What Makes You Run Late: Nothing! I like being fashionably early. Tardiness is another pet peeve of mine.

X.  X-Rays You’ve Had: Nothing besides dental x-rays. I’ve had a panoramic dental x-ray done, which was pretty cool.

Y.  Yummy Food You Make: I like making my own vinaigrette, which is a condiment, not a food, but salad dressing ain’t got nothing on me!

Z.  Zoo – Favorite Animal: The great apes (excluding humans). I can watch them all day. Mike likes the “poo-flinging monkeys.”

The Kong Conundrum

4 Jun

Attention pet bloggers: I am in need of your assistance.

I purchased a Kong Wobbler last month when I discovered the popular feeding dispenser was available in a smaller size for dogs up to 25 pounds. Oscar’s one food-motivated pup, so I assumed it wouldn’t take him long to figure out that “wobbling” the toy would make his kibble would fall out. Besides, he’s a professional at cleaning out a classic Kong.

The complete opposite happened.

Instead of moving the Wobbler around with his nose or paw, he tried to reach for the food through the hole like with the classic Kong chews. I tried a different approach, showing Oscar that knocking the toy over results in food, but he would sit there and let me do all the work while he munched away. I left him alone with the Wobbler so he could investigate on his own only to have him turn his back on it after several failed attempts.

To my blogging friends I pose this question: How do you teach a dog to use the Wobbler? Help!

Hey, Give That Back!

Oscar’s Barbecue Extravaganza

31 May

Oscar and I are back on the blogosphere following Mother Nature’s first hints of summer! The sunshine revitalized our spirits after a demanding work week and we hope our American blogging friends enjoyed a three-day weekend filled with family, friends and good food.

Camping out by the barbecue. Does Oscar look more slender? Yea or nay?

Waiting patiently (using the term very loosely) while the grill works its magic.

Grilling is taking much longer than he anticipated!

Although our weekend consisted of strolling through the park, bagging sales and gathering around the barbecue, I spent some time reflecting on Memorial Day’s purpose. Many thanks to the men, women and war dogs who served and who continue to serve their country. Your sacrifice hasn’t been forgotten.
